Ethio telecom expands its EV Charging Station with the Launch of a Fourth Public Super-Fast Smart Station in Adama City!

Adama EV charging Event

Bringing New Possibilities: Clean Energy, Greener Horizons! ADAMA Super-Fast EV Charging Station

As part of its unwavering commitment to realizing the country’s Green Legacy and supporting the growing electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem with state-of-the-art technology, Ethio telecom has today officially inaugurated its fourth public use Super-Fast EV Charging Station. Located in Adama city along Welenchiti Street, past Derartu Square, this station marks a significant milestone as the first of its kind to expand outside of Addis Ababa into regional cities.

In addition to the four stations already built for public use, our company is also establishing electric vehicle (EV) charging stations for several key national institutions, thereby reinforcing its commitment to the nation’s green development ecosystem.

This newly launched fourth station is powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and equipped with cutting-edge technology. It features super-fast chargers capable of automatically diagnosing and adapting to various vehicle specifications—with specific compatibility for European EV models, addressing a critical market gap.

The station can accommodate up to 12 vehicles at a time, ensuring efficient service for drivers. With this commissioning, our company’s total combined capacity now reaches 60 vehicles at a time across the four stations we have built.

Operational Success and Environmental Impact

It is worth noting that our company previously built and commissioned charging stations capable of serving up to 48 electric vehicles at a time along both directions of the Bole–Megenagna corridor and around Summit-Fyel Bet area of Addis Ababa.

Since commencing operations on February 11, 2025, these stations have served over 284,032 electric vehicles, dispensing 7,159,066.88 kilowatt-hours of energy. This initiative has successfully prevented the emission of 10,028,363.32 kilograms of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere—an environmental contribution equivalent to planting more than 49,559 trees.

Smart technology powered by AI

The station features 12 super-fast chargers, each with a capacity of up to 180 kW, enabling rapid charging times. The infrastructure employs advanced systems characterized by:

  • Intelligent Diagnostics:Leveraging AI, the system analyzes battery specifications and customer requests in advance (charging-after-diagnosis), delivering a self-adjusting, optimized charging session.
  • Battery Health & Efficiency:The technology ensures zero energy loss, high efficiency, and zero error rates, while actively maintaining and restoring battery health.
  • Future-Ready Scalability:The infrastructure is designed with a scalable architecture, allowing for cost-effective and rapid expansion or upgrades to meet growing demand.

Seamless Digital Experience via telebirr

Delivering on the promise of a digital lifestyle, the station operates 24/7 and is fully integrated with the telebirr SuperApp:

  • Integrated Payment:Customers can settle payments quickly, securely, and conveniently via telebirr.
  • Self-Service Capability:Drivers can initiate service and complete transactions independently.
  • Smart Monitoring:A robust online monitoring system allows users to track charging progress in real-time. The system is backed by highly reliable cloud servers connected via Fiber, 4G, and 5G networks.
  • Tap-to-Charge:NFC (Near Field Communication) technology enables smart authentication, allowing users to start charging with a simple tap.

A National EV Charging Platform

Alongside deploying super-fast EV charging stations, Ethio telecom has developed a National EV Charging Platform Application that allows EV charging stations built by other stakeholders to seamlessly integrate into a unified digital ecosystem.  Through this platform:

  • Other EV station providers can easily integrate their charging infrastructure
  • Customers receive standardized digital services, similar to those offered by Ethio telecom
  • Payments and services are enabled through secure digital platforms such as telebirr
  • Real-time monitoring, smart maintenance, and service reliability are ensured
  • The national EV ecosystem expands faster through collaboration and interoperability

This platform-driven approach significantly accelerates the expansion of Ethiopia’s electric mobility ecosystem and supports the country’s transition toward a green economy and sustainable transportation.

Strengthening Ethiopia’s Digital and Green Transformation

As Ethiopia accelerates its transition toward a green economy, sustainable mobility, and digital innovation, Ethio telecom continues to play a leading role by deploying reliable, intelligent, and future-ready infrastructure.

The inauguration of this fourth high-tech charging station reflects Ethio telecom’s continued commitment to transforming the nation’s transportation ecosystem through clean energy, digital solutions, and advanced technologies. This milestone reinforces the company’s vision of supporting environmentally responsible mobility, reducing carbon emissions, and building a sustainable and digitally empowered future for Ethiopia.
