Further solidifying its commitment as a Green Operator, Ethio telecom today launched its nationwide reforestation initiative across all its regional offices. Aligned with the national theme “Planting Hope” and the corporate motto “For a Green Ethiopia,” the company has set a strategic target to plant 250,000 seedlings corporate-wide. This initiative serves as a cornerstone of the company’s Sustainable Strategy, aimed at fostering long-term community benefits through comprehensive environmental stewardship and green development.
In support of the 8th Round National Green Legacy Campaign, the company mobilized over 3,500 employees and partners at corporate, zonal, and regional levels. Accordingly, reforestation activities were carried out at designated sites in the Entoto (Kuskuam) area and across the 18 administrative regions, where specific plots were allocated by local administrations to further the company’s green mission.
Ethio telecom is currently implementing its three-year “Next Horizon: Digital & Beyond 2028 Strategy,” a comprehensive strategic roadmap designed to accelerate Ethiopia’s digital transformation. This strategy is instrumental in driving digital inclusion, job creation, and universal economic growth, while simultaneously elevating the company’s role within the continental digital economy. Since its launch last fiscal year, the strategy has already yielded significant successes and tangible results across all sectors.
In alignment with international sustainability goals, Ethio telecom is a primary contributor to Ethiopia’s transition toward a green economy through the development of robust Green Infrastructure. By adhering to Green Operator principles, the company is amplifying its environmental stewardship through significant investments in renewable energy, including the deployment of advanced solar-powered network systems, hybrid power solutions, and energy-efficient Green Data Centers. These strategic interventions have effectively optimized power consumption and achieved a measurable reduction in the company’s carbon footprint.
As a leader in Renewable Energy Transition, Ethio telecom has strategically expanded its green infrastructure by commissioning 190 pure solar-powered telecom sites, 867 hybrid power systems (Solar and Battery), and 1,114 lithium-ion battery storage units. These high-impact interventions have successfully reduced diesel generator runtime by up to 40%. Furthermore, through the deployment of 215 new solar sites and the modernization of 774 existing stations, the company has added 12.72 MW of solar capacity, bringing the total capacity to 39.72 MW. This significant milestone drastically reduces reliance on conventional power sources and serves as a primary driver for Ethiopia’s green development transition.
To catalyze national sustainable mobility, Ethio telecom has deployed over 9 ultra-fast Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations with a combined capacity to charge 108 vehicles simultaneously. Since the inauguration of this service on February 11, 2025, through July 31, 2026, the company has successfully facilitated the charging of over 481,112 electric vehicles. This strategic initiative utilized 11.2 million kWh of electric power, resulting in the mitigation of 15.4 million kilograms of CO2 emissions—an environmental impact equivalent to the carbon sequestration of more than 76,340 trees.
Ethio telecom has achieved significant progress through its Green Development Project over several years. Reflecting our commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Ethio telecom secured the “Most Admired Ethiopian Brand Doing Good for Society and the Environment” award at the Brand Africa 100 awards for two consecutive years. Furthermore, our leadership in the national green agenda was recognized with the “Ethiopian Green Award 2025” from the Ethiopian Environmental Protection Authority.
Demonstrating its tangible commitment to CSR, Ethio telecom’s 8th round Green Legacy initiative is set to generate over 2,000 new job opportunities through seedling planting, nurturing and protecting. Cumulatively, over the past seven years, the company has created temporary employment for more than 24.8 thousand citizens. Furthermore, we are making significant strides in ecosystem restoration and combating desertification, having achieved a remarkable average seedling survival rate of 82.7% to date, effectively transforming degraded landscapes into thriving green environments.
Building on a robust foundation of environmental stewardship, during which over 4.6 million seedlings were planted across 889 locations nationwide over the past seven consecutive years, our company is currently executing its 8th round by planting, nurturing, and protecting 250,000 additional seedlings. To drive this year’s environmental agenda, Ethio telecom has allocated a budget exceeding 42.4 million ETB, bringing its total cumulative investment in environmental protection and green development initiatives to over 159.9 million ETB over the last seven years.
