FAQ

The Ethiopian Capital Market Authority is a government regulatory body that ensures fairness and transparency in the market. Its primary objective is to protect investors' (your) rights and prevent illicit practices.

A capital market is a platform where companies can raise funds from the public or institutional investors by issuing shares or bonds. The capital raised helps companies launch new projects, expand business operations, upgrade technology, and create additional job opportunities.

Similarly, the government can secure financing for infrastructure projects—such as roads, electricity, water, and other public utilities—through the sale of bonds.

On the other hand, by participating in the capital market, investors can channel their savings into profitable investment options that grow their wealth. They can earn returns through dividends or capital gains (price appreciation) from shares and receive interest income from bonds.

In general, the primary objective of a capital market is to strengthen economic growth by mobilizing domestic savings into productive investment sectors, supporting corporate expansion, fostering job creation, and enhancing the transparency and accessibility of the financial system.

A share represents a unit of ownership in a company. Anyone who buys shares acquires a proportional ownership right in that company based on the amount invested. This grants the shareholder legal rights and benefits regarding the company’s assets, profits, and governance, relative to their holding.

A person who purchases shares is called a "shareholder" or "stakeholder." Based on the number of shares held, a shareholder may receive dividends. Furthermore, they hold the right to vote at general assemblies, the preemptive right to purchase newly issued shares before they are offered to the general public, and the right to participate in the governance of the company.

Shareholders who have purchased shares from Ethio Telecom or similar organizations can sell, buy, or manage their holdings through licensed investment securities dealers (brokers) authorized by the Ethiopian Capital Market Authority (ECMA).

To buy or sell shares, a shareholder must first open a Trading Account with an authorized broker or investment dealer. Once the account is active, the shareholder submits a buy or sell order to the broker. The broker then facilitates the transaction by matching buyers and sellers within the market.

Through this process, shareholders can monitor their share balance, purchase additional shares, or sell their holdings in part or in full. Additionally, since share prices fluctuate based on market conditions, company performance, and investor demand, the buying and selling prices are determined by the market

If shareholders have questions, require clarification, or encounter any challenges regarding the management of their shares, they can access support through our dedicated Regulatory Affairs Department. Assistance is available by visiting the office in person or by using our website, telephone, and other communication channels. The department provides the necessary support to ensure shareholders are backed by accurate information, their questions are addressed properly, and their share management process is handled efficiently.

Shareholders can stay updated on our company's business activities, financial performance, new projects, share-related matters, and other relevant information by visiting our corporate website. As a registered shareholder of the company, you have the right to participate in the General Assembly. The General Assembly is the company's highest decision-making body, serving as a forum where shareholders review corporate governance, evaluate financial performance, discuss strategic roadmaps, and vote on key resolutions.

The company will officially announce the date, venue, time, and agenda of the General Assembly in advance, in strict compliance with the Commercial Code of Ethiopia and other relevant regulatory guidelines. This notice will be published via our official website, mass media channels, or other legally mandated communication networks.

Shareholders can attend the assembly in person or vote through a legally authorized Proxy. During the assembly, shareholders retain the right to cast votes, raise queries, offer strategic feedback, and participate in decision-making on the tabled agenda items. Furthermore, the General Assembly is where the company's annual reports, financial statements, dividend distributions, Board of Directors appointments, and other critical corporate resolutions are formally reviewed and approved.

If you need to update or correct your shareholder information, you can do so by contacting the licensed investment broker through whom you traded, submit your enquiry through our investor portal /ethiotelecom.et/investor-relations/ or contact to our contact center 128 or by directly visiting our internal Regulatory Affairs Department. To update critical records, such as your legal name, address, telephone number, bank account details, or other personal data, you will be required to present a renewed official ID alongside any necessary legal supporting documentation.

Dividends are paid out only when the company generates a profit and the General Assembly of shareholders approves a dividend distribution resolution. The payout will be directly credited to the shareholder's telebirr account.

In the capital market, share prices are determined by the forces of demand and supply. When a company delivers strong performance, investor demand for its shares typically increases, driving the market price upward.
