Ethio telecom and Djibouti Telecom Strengthen Strategic Alliance to Accelerate Regional Digital Transformation

ADDIS ABABA, October 17, 2025 – Ethio telecom CEO Frehiwot Tamru and Mr. Mohammed Assoweh, Director General of Djibouti Telecom, held a high-level strategic meeting in Addis Ababa today to review their long-standing partnership and explore new opportunities for collaboration in the rapidly evolving East African digital ecosystem.

The discussions focused on accelerating the implementation of the previously agreed “Horizon Fiber” tripartite initiative from Djibouti Telecom’s side a strategic collaboration between Ethio Telecom, Djibouti Telecom, and Sudatel and on deepening cooperation across key areas such as international gateway partnerships, interconnectivity, mobile money, enterprise solutions, and roaming services, all aimed at strengthening regional digital integration.

Frehiwot highlighted Ethio telecom’s bold three-year transformation roadmap, “Next Horizon: Digital & Beyond 2028,”which underscores the company’s commitment to building powerful partnerships that drive digital inclusion, innovation, and sustainable growth across the continent. She emphasized Ethiopia’s unparalleled infrastructure potential and large market size, alongside the remarkable growth in customer base, expanding internet coverage, and the transformative impact of telebirr, the country’s flagship mobile money platform that is accelerating financial inclusion at scale.

The CEO also underscored the exponential growth in International Gateway (IGW) traffic and emphasized the urgency of leveraging the long-standing partnership to expand collaboration into dynamic business models including cooperation on submarine cable equity and investment — in order to unlock new opportunities for regional connectivity and accelerate Africa’s digital transformation journey.

Mr. Mohammed Assoweh reaffirmed Djibouti Telecom’s strong commitment to the partnership, describing it as a model for strategic cooperation between African operators. He highlighted Djibouti Telecom’s capacity to support Ethiopia’s increasing IGW demands and praised the rapid growth of telebirr, identifying it as a promising area for future cross-border digital financial collaboration.

Both companies reiterated their shared vision of ensuring that the benefits of digital progress are accessible to the citizens of both nations, reaffirming their roles as pioneering enablers of Africa’s digital future.

Following the meeting, the Djibouti Telecom delegation toured Ethio telecom’s Digital Experience Center, where they explored cutting-edge solutions in smart agriculture, e-education, and digital healthcare showcasing the transformative potential of technology to drive inclusive socioeconomic development across the continent.
