Ethio telecom announced service improvement and major tariff reduction on its Fixed Broadband services today February 27, 2020 in the presence of invited customers, partners and stakeholders.

In line with the Ethiopian government’s commitment to ensure economic development by creating favorable business environment with its ‘ease of doing business’ initiative, ethio telecom developed a three year BRIDGE strategy containing various service improvements and tariff reductions.

This fixed broadband service improvement and tariff reduction is derived from this Ethio telecom’s three years’ strategy, which pursues product and technology excellence to meet and excel customer expectation and uplift Ethiopia’s status in broadband penetration thereby harvesting all the benefits arising out of broadband service penetration and use to the best of our country.

The service improvement on fixed broadband services includes; improving the existing broadband infrastructure capacity, deploying new infrastructure, introducing easy and convenient service delivery, expanding reliable and secure broadband service options for enterprise customers, introducing new technology and services, and making massive tariff reduction.

With the the tariff reduction, existing fixed broadband internet service subscribers will be upgraded to a minimum of 3 times higher than the current internet speed. To this effect, the company has developed several offers and solutions which will have significant impact on the broadband service penetration and quality.

Thre will be up to 69% tariff reduction has been made for residential fixed broadband internet service. Hence, a 1 Mbps internet service monthly fee which was previously Birr

978 has been reduced to Birr 499. In addition, a 2 Mbps internet monthly fee which was previously Birr 1768 has been reduced to Birr 699. While, the Birr 3191 monthly fee for 4 Mbps internet service has been reduced to Birr 1099. Furthermore, the previously 10 Mbps maximum internet service limit that residential customers could subscribe to has been increased to 50 Mbps.

Likewise, up to 65% tariff reduction has been made for Enterprise fixed broadband internet customers. Hence, a 1 Mbps internet service monthly fee which was previously Birr 1369 has been reduced to Birr 709. In addition, a 2 Mbps internet monthly fee which was previously Birr 2475 has been reduced to Birr 999. While, the Birr 4468 monthly fee for 4 Mbps internet  service has been reduced to Birr 1575.

Also, up to 72% tariff reduction has been made for Enterprise broadband VPN internet customers. Hence, a 1 Mbps internet service monthly fee which was previously Birr 1809 has been reduced to Birr 499. In addition, a 2 Mbps internet monthly fee which was previously Birr 2846 has been reduced to 899 Birr. While, the Birr 5137 monthly fee for 4 Mbps internet  service has been reduced to Birr 1439.

In addition, the service subscription fee as well as the deposit requirement for new customers has been removed, while reconnection fee for existing customers has also been made free of charge. As part of the service improvement, customers can now apply for the service online via https://onlineservices.ethiotelecom.et at their convenience.

Moreover, it is known that the company has been offering fixed broadband internet devices with an affordable price. Now, the company has facilitated mechanisms which enable customers to buy devices with twelve months installment payment. Similarly, Ethio telecom has also introduced a twelve months installment based payment for installation related costs for those customers whose premises are located at a distance more than 500 meters from the ethio telecom’s connection point.

Telecom services in general and broadband internet services in particular have paramount impact on economic development, livelihood improvement of a nation and its citizens. Broadband is an indispensable driver of economic development and diversification for technological and social transformation at the individual, business and government levels. Different studies have concluded that a 10% increase in fixed broadband penetration would result in an increase of 1.38% GDP growth in developing countries.

To satisfy the increasing demand for high speed data and internet services, ethio telecom has recently made 4G LTE service network expansion all over Addis Ababa as well launched LTE Advanced mobile service in selected parts of Addis where data usage trend is very high. In line with this, the company has also completed its preparation to expand a high speed broadband internet service via optical fiber to its residential customers (Fiber-to-the-Home).

Finally, to support the country’s effort towards development, the company has expressed its commitment towards the deployment of advanced telecom infrastructure that enables it to offer quality and reachable broadband internet service.
